2004 Ateneo - La Salle Championship Matches

Play is governed by the 2004 Rules of Golf issued by the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, the USGA and where applicable, by Local Rules. The Championship Matches will be contested over 3 days with 42 matches, each of which is worth a point. The format includes FOURSOMES (two-man team alternate shot), FOUR-BALL (two-man team better ball) and SINGLES (18 holes at match play). During the first two days of competition (foursomes & four-ball) is determined through agreement of both teams’ captains. There are total of 42 matches. One point is awarded for each match won; a half a point is awarded for each match tied. The side with the most points at the conclusion of the match wins the Championship Matches. If at the conclusion of the Challenge Matches, the teams are tied at 21 points each, the team who last won the Championship Matches will win the Cup. In this year’s case, since this will be the inaugural match, each team will be declared Co-champions.

FOURSOMES (Two-man team, 6 matches Friday & Saturday) - “Foursome” play is a match where 2 golfers compete in a team against two other golfers and each side plays one ball. The golfers play alternate shots (Player A hits tee shot, Player B hit second shot, etc.) until the hole is played out. Team members alternate playing the tee shots, with one golfer hitting the tee shots on odd numbered holes and the other hitting the tee shots on even numbered holes. The team with the best score wins the hole. Should the two teams tie for the best score, the hole is halved.

FOUR-BALL (Two-man team, 6 matches Friday & Saturday)- “Four-ball” play is a in which each member of the two-man team plays his own ball. Four balls are in play per hole with each of the four players recording a score on the hole. The team whose player posts the best score on that hole wins the hole. Should players from each team tie for the best score, the hole is halved.

SINGLES (18 Individual Matches, Sunday) - “Singles” is a match in which one player competes with another player. A player wins a match when he is up by more holes than there are holes remaining to play. “Singles” is a match in which one player competes with another player. A player wins a match when he is up by more holes than there are holes remaining to play.

Each team captain submits the order of play for his team. The lists from each captain are matched in order, resulting in the pairings. Pace of play is 50 seconds per shot. Only team captains or designated captains for the day can talk to players. No cellphones are allowed during matches.
